It is disheartening…
…that more people seem to be affected by the picture of two kids under the rain in a street in Manila, while barely taking time to read news article which involved the displacement of at least 50,000 people due to the massive floods caused by Tropical Storm Meari.
Nor do the same people, who swear lines of supposed compassion, sympathy, and anger, take the time to read the news stories about the massive floods in Cotabato and Maguindanao which have caused the evacuation of at least 900,000 men, women, and children.
The picture is an indictment of the kind of society we have become. A society where parents use their children to beg for alms and the children are made to believe that it is their duty. A society where events and disasters are only given attention by the media when they involve people in Metro Manila, celebrities and politicians. A society where people quickly put the blame on others for the inadequacies of government, non-government organizations, and the private sector.
How about you? Ask yourself, what have you done for the forgotten, the oppressed, and the silenced?
Have you struggled for agrarian reform? Have you struggled for human rights? Have you fought for social justice?
If not, then ask yourself, are you just good in passing comments online? Or are you going to walk your talk?
Ask yourself!

Got some Kevin Carter treatment, did ya? This is exactly what I have been talking about— people handing out opinions only for the sake of having an opinion.

this is very inspiring, sir. I’m going to ask our social involvement program on how the students can be of help to the flood victims in Cotabato or on what more can we do. I’m thinking our upcoming activities should be for the benefit of this cause.
