— what some Yemeni parents say to their children, according to activist Farea al-Muslimi’s testimony before a Congressional hearing Tuesday on the use of drones.

This reminds me of an anti-insurgency campaign conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency in the Philippines during the 1950s which made use of Philippine folklore.

To cut off popular support for the communist Huk guerrillas, American advisors to the Philippine armed forces headed by Colonel Edward Lansdale, conducted psychological operations by playing on the supernatural beliefs of Filipinos. They would use the widespread belief in aswangs, or local mythological vampires, to keep civilians away from the Huks.

Wherever there was a strong presence of Huks in an area, Lansdale and his crew would spread rumors among the locals that there were aswangs in town. And should the locals venture out of their homes at night, they might be kidnapped and eaten by the aswangs.

Using the same supernatural belief, some of the psychological operations teams would also kidnap Huks, inflict vampire bites on their necks, drain their blood, and leave them in areas where the other Huks would find them. Upon discovery, some guerrillas would abandon their cause for fear of being taken by the aswangs.

The fear of aswangs was so effective it eventually reduced the number of guerrillas, cut them off from the civilian population and eventually ended the Huk rebellion.

Decades later, the effect of the aswangs venturing at night persisted. So much so that in my childhood years, visits to relatives in rural areas would always result to early dinners and sleep at night. And the same relatives would warn me and my cousins not to go out of the house after dinner or else, the aswangs would come and get us.

Up in the rice terraces of the Cordillera mountain range of the Philippines live the last few tattooed women of Kalinga. Traditional tattooing is seen as archaic and painful by the younger generations of Kalingas. As an Indigenous group that has successfully fought against colonizing forces, it is losing the practice of traditional tattooing because of the changing perspective of beauty and interpretations of the practice by outside scholars.

Studies on the tradition interpreted the practice to show that men were given tattoos because of brave acts during tribal wars while the women were given tattoos just to decorate their bodies. Men who attempt to get traditional tattoos without acts of bravery are shunned by the community and are now unable to continue the practice without facing criminal charges from the government. Women are unconstrained by the same reasons but are struggling to continue the practice because of the pervasive western interpretations of aesthetics that changed the perceptions of “beauty” in Kalinga. To the women of Kalinga, the batok or the tattoo goes beyond beauty and prestige but it is symbolic of the traditional values of women’s strength and fortitude.

The traditional tattoo is an indigenous body art, an expression of the psychological dimensions of life, health, love and it defines local perceptions of existence. Sadly there is now a decline of the traditional art among indigenous women brought about by the changing perspective of the meaning of the tattoo and its stigmatized practice. It is now considered a vanishing art along with the gatekeepers of the knowledge associated with it.

If only we could get people to care about the thousands killed in Pakistan, Yemen, Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria like they do about the 3 killed in Boston.

There’d be no more endless wars.

I got screamed at all for hours for saying this the other day, so I’m just gonna shut the fuck up today.

I can’t be bothered to care anymore. I know many people don’t agree with me but each second of human suffering and each death is just as tragic as the next. It doesn’t matter who they are. It may not be sad for some people not to be able to continue doing things that harm others with their lives but the fact that they’re a human-being, a soul, an entity equal to and tied to our own and are now gone always will be.

The Qur’an and Talmud got it right:

Whoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed the entire world. And whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved the entire world.

The exchange, particularly the quote above reminds me of a scene from Schindler’s List.

On April 15, 2013, while driving along the western edge of the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, AFP photographer Dimitar Dilkoff came across an odd sight: an overloaded truck lumbering down the road, a young boy clutching a satellite dish riding in the back.

The boy’s family was fleeing the city in the wake of yet another air raid earlier that morning. “One building with people inside was demolished,” Dilkoff tells TIME. “There were many injured. Most people left in the city were very nervous and irate.”

“I took some pictures through the car window with hope that there would be just one in focus,” he says. “After that we lost the truck in heavy traffic.”

The image he captured (above), somewhat softened by the filter of his windshield, was featured in this week’s Pictures of the Week on LightBox and in the New York Times.

“The satellite dish is kind of absurd and useless there,” Dilkoff says, because the greater part of city has been without electricity since it became one of the nation’s central battlegrounds last July. “But it is a very important belonging for that family on their way out of Aleppo.”

“Currently there isn’t a fierce fight between the government army and the rebels,” he adds, “but there are snipers, mortars shelling and air strikes, which make the daily life of the local people very dangerous and unforeseen.”

According to AFP, “some 1.3 million people have fled Syria to neighboring countries since the beginning of the conflict, which has cost well over 70,000 lives.”

With a bomb strapped to his chest, one of the Boston Marathon suspects was killed early Friday after he and his accomplice brother robbed a 7-Eleven, shot a police officer to death, carjacked an SUV and hurled explosives in an extraordinary firefight with law enforcement, authorities told NBC News.

The second suspect — the one in the white hat in photos released by the FBI — was on the loose. Gov. Deval Patrick ordered the entire city of Boston and some suburbs to stay inside during what he called a “massive manhunt,” and police began a house-to-house search. Boston shut down its buses and subway system.

The suspects are brothers of Chechen origin with the last name Tsarnaev, law enforcement officials told NBC News. The suspect at large, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is 19, was born in Kyrgyzstan and has a Massachusetts driver’s license, they said. The dead suspect was identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, born in Russia.
